In the soft moonlight, a leopard is resting high in the branches of an old acacia tree. Something is rustling in the grass and brush below. A honey badger or a porcupine? A genet? Or is it a hyena? With muted color and dappled light, it is hard to make out exactly what it is. But the leopard, whose eyes see perfectly in the darkest of nights, can assess the intruder quickly and accurately. I have painted many leopards at night, because this is most often how one encounters a leopard in Africa...by the light of the moon.
